What it is

When to specify beam cutting

Beam cutting is the most consequential work in this trade. A beam is carrying load from everything above it, and removing or notching one without transferring that load first is how buildings crack, deflect and in the worst cases fail. Nothing on this page should be read as an invitation to cut a beam on a verbal instruction.

We cut beams for openings through downstands, for full removal during structural alterations, for notching to accept new services, and for demolition sequencing. In every case the work runs to a structural engineer's design showing how load is carried while the beam is out of action, and to a method statement that has been signed before mobilisation.

Method is chosen by section and access. Wall sawing suits shallower beams with clear faces. Wire sawing handles deep sections, heavy reinforcement and awkward geometry. Core drilling forms the corner holes that let either method start and finish cleanly.

How the job runs

STEP 01

Engineer's design first

We do not price a beam cut without a structural design showing propping, load transfer and sequence. If you do not have one, we will say so.

STEP 02

Prop and monitor

Temporary works installed to the design, with movement monitoring where the engineer requires it.

STEP 03

Scan and set out

Full scan of the cut zone to locate main bars, links and any post-tension cables before the first cut.

STEP 04

Cut, restrain, remove

Section restrained throughout the cut, removed in planned pieces, and the area handed back with props left as designed.

Site control

What we will not do

We will not cut a structural beam without an engineer's design. Not on a verbal assurance that it is fine, not because the programme is tight, and not because another contractor quoted it without asking. This costs us work and we are comfortable with that.

We will also stop mid-job if the scan finds something the design did not account for, such as post-tension cables in a beam recorded as conventionally reinforced. Continuing on the original method statement at that point is how people get hurt.

Beam cutting questions

Can you cut a concrete beam without an engineer?
No. A beam carries load from the structure above it, and cutting one without a design showing how that load is carried in the meantime risks cracking, deflection or collapse. We require a structural engineer's propping and sequencing design before we price the work, let alone start it. If you do not have an engineer we can point you at consultants we work with regularly.
How do you decide between wire sawing and wall sawing?
Section depth, reinforcement density and access. Wall sawing suits shallower beams with a clear face to mount the track on. Wire sawing handles deep sections, congested reinforcement, composite elements and geometry a rigid blade cannot follow. We confirm the method at survey once we can see the beam and the space around it.
What happens if you find post-tension cables in the beam?
We stop and refer it back to the structural engineer. A beam recorded as conventionally reinforced that turns out to be post-tensioned is a different structural problem and the original method statement no longer applies. Cutting a PT cable releases stored energy instantly and is dangerous as well as damaging.
How long does the propping stay in place?
As long as the engineer's design says, which is normally until the permanent works carrying the transferred load are complete and have gained strength. We install propping to the design and leave it in place; removing it is a decision for the engineer, not for us or for the main contractor's programme.
Can you form an opening through a beam for ductwork?
Yes, this is common on MEP coordination, but the position and size have to be approved by the engineer. Openings near supports or in the tension zone are far more critical than openings at mid-depth near mid-span. We scan first, cut to the approved position, and dress the opening ready for the sleeve or duct.
