What it is

When to specify floor sawing

Floor sawing uses a walk-behind machine with a large diamond blade running on a fixed axle, cutting downward into a horizontal surface. It is by a wide margin the fastest method per linear metre, which is why it is the default for trenches, joints and long straight cuts across a slab.

The most common uses are service trenches for drainage and electrical routes, movement and control joints in new slabs, and cutting the perimeter of a floor opening before the section is lifted out. On industrial jobs across Mussafah, ICAD and Al Quoz it is also the method for cutting out damaged bays for replacement.

Depth is limited by blade diameter, and every extra 100 mm of cut depth needs a substantially larger blade and machine. Where the slab is thicker than a single pass can manage, we either cut from both faces or move to wire sawing, and we will tell you which at survey.

How the job runs

STEP 01

Set out the line

Cut lines marked from the drawing and agreed on site, with falls and levels checked where drainage is involved.

STEP 02

Scan the slab

GPR run along the cut line to locate reinforcement, post-tension cables and buried services before the blade goes in.

STEP 03

Cut in passes

Blade set to depth and the cut run in controlled passes, with water fed to the blade throughout.

STEP 04

Lift and clear

Sections lifted or broken out, slurry vacuumed and bunded, edges dressed and waste removed from site.

Post-tensioned slabs and why scanning is not optional

A large proportion of suspended slabs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi towers are post-tensioned. Cutting a post-tension cable releases stored energy instantly and can cause serious injury as well as structural damage that is expensive and slow to remediate.

There is no visual way to tell a post-tensioned slab from a conventionally reinforced one once it is finished. We scan every suspended slab before floor sawing, mark the cable runs on the surface, and set the cut line to clear them. Where the required cut cannot avoid a cable, we stop and refer it back to the structural engineer.

On ground slabs the risk is different but still real: buried drainage, electrical ducts and chilled water lines all sit under floors and rarely match the as-built drawing.

Floor sawing questions

How deep can a floor saw cut?
Around 500 mm in a single pass with a large blade, though most jobs sit well under that. Depth is directly limited by blade diameter, so cutting deeper needs a bigger machine rather than more time. Where a slab is thicker than one pass allows, we cut from both faces if accessible, or specify wire sawing instead.
Do you cut post-tensioned slabs?
Yes, but only after scanning. Post-tension cables carry stored energy and cutting one is dangerous as well as structurally damaging. We run GPR over the full cut line, mark cable positions on the surface, and set the cut to clear them. If the required line cannot avoid a cable, we stop and refer it back to the structural engineer rather than proceed.
Can you cut indoors or in a basement car park?
Yes. We use electric and hydraulic machines indoors and below ground because petrol saws produce exhaust fumes that are unacceptable in enclosed spaces. Water is fed to the blade and slurry is vacuumed and bunded so it does not reach drainage gullies or lower levels.
How do you stop slurry spreading across the floor?
The cut is bunded and a wet vacuum runs alongside the saw collecting slurry as it is produced. On finished floors we also sheet and protect the surrounding area. Slurry is collected into containers and removed from site rather than washed into the nearest gully, and disposal is included in the quoted figure.
Is floor sawing cheaper than other methods?
Per linear metre, yes, which is why it is the default wherever the geometry suits it. A long straight cut on a horizontal surface is the fastest thing a diamond blade can do. The cost only rises when depth exceeds a single pass or when access forces a smaller machine into a job it is not sized for.
