What it is

When to specify wire sawing

Wire sawing pulls a loop of diamond-beaded wire through concrete under tension, driven by a hydraulic power unit. Because the cutting element is a flexible wire rather than a rigid blade, there is no relationship between machine size and the thickness of the section, which is why wire sawing is the answer wherever depth defeats every other method.

It is also the quietest and least destructive method available. There is no percussion and effectively no vibration, so wire sawing is specified next to sensitive equipment, on structures that cannot tolerate shock loading, and in occupied buildings where noise limits are tight.

The trade-off is setup. Wire sawing requires drilled feed holes at the corners of the cut, pulleys, a power pack and a tensioning arrangement, so mobilisation takes longer than a blade job. On the right section it still finishes faster than any alternative, and on many sections it is the only alternative.

Weight, lifting and the part that goes wrong

The cutting is rarely the difficult part of a wire saw job. The difficult part is what happens the moment the section becomes free, and the failures in this trade almost always happen at that point rather than during the cut.

Concrete weighs roughly 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre, so a modest looking section can be several tonnes. Every wire saw job we quote includes a calculated section weight, a restraint arrangement holding the piece while the cut completes, and an agreed lifting method with a laydown area identified before we start.

If a contractor quotes wire sawing without asking how the section is coming out, that is the question they have not thought about yet.

Wire sawing questions

When should I specify wire sawing instead of a saw?
When the section is thicker than a blade can reach, when reinforcement is dense enough to destroy a blade, when vibration is unacceptable, or when the geometry is not a straight line on a flat face. Wire sawing costs more to mobilise but on those sections it is faster than the alternatives and often the only method that works at all.
Is there really no depth limit?
There is no machine limit. The wire is a loop and can be made as long as the job needs, so thickness stops being the constraint. What actually limits a wire saw job is access for the pulleys and drive unit, and the arrangement for removing the section once it is free. Those are the questions we ask at survey.
How much vibration does wire sawing produce?
Effectively none. There is no percussion and no rigid blade loading the structure, so wire sawing is the method specified next to live plant, laboratory equipment, data halls and hospital installations. Where a structure is fragile or already damaged, it is often the only method that will not make the condition worse.
Can you cut underwater?
Yes. Wire sawing works submerged and is used on piles, quay walls, intake structures and other marine elements. The equipment is remotely operated so no diver is exposed to the cutting operation itself, though dive support is normally required for rigging.
How do you get the cut section out?
That is planned before cutting starts. We calculate the section weight, design a restraint that holds the piece in position while the cut completes, and agree the lifting method and laydown area with you in advance. On larger sections the cut is subdivided so each piece is within the available crane capacity.
