What it is
When to specify wire sawing
Wire sawing pulls a loop of diamond-beaded wire through concrete under tension, driven by a hydraulic power unit. Because the cutting element is a flexible wire rather than a rigid blade, there is no relationship between machine size and the thickness of the section, which is why wire sawing is the answer wherever depth defeats every other method.
It is also the quietest and least destructive method available. There is no percussion and effectively no vibration, so wire sawing is specified next to sensitive equipment, on structures that cannot tolerate shock loading, and in occupied buildings where noise limits are tight.
The trade-off is setup. Wire sawing requires drilled feed holes at the corners of the cut, pulleys, a power pack and a tensioning arrangement, so mobilisation takes longer than a blade job. On the right section it still finishes faster than any alternative, and on many sections it is the only alternative.

Bridge and infrastructure sections
Beams, decks, piers and abutments cut and removed in controlled sections for widening, repair or replacement.
Mass concrete and foundations
Pile caps, raft slabs, thrust blocks and machine bases cut through in full thickness.
Heavily reinforced structures
Sections where reinforcement density would destroy a blade, including composite steel and concrete.
Vibration sensitive environments
Cutting adjacent to live plant, laboratories, data halls and hospital equipment where shock is unacceptable.
Confined and restricted access
Shafts, tunnels and voids where a saw cannot be positioned but wire and pulleys can.
Marine and underwater cutting
Piles, quay structures and submerged elements cut with remotely operated equipment.
Sequence
How the job runs
Survey and lift plan
Section weights calculated, crane or lifting arrangement designed, and the removal sequence agreed before cutting starts.
Feed holes and scan
Corner holes core drilled to pass the wire, with the full cut zone scanned beforehand.
Rig and tension
Pulleys set, wire looped and tensioned, drive unit positioned clear of the removal path.
Cut and lift out
Cut run under continuous water feed, section restrained throughout and craned out to a prepared laydown area.

Weight, lifting and the part that goes wrong
The cutting is rarely the difficult part of a wire saw job. The difficult part is what happens the moment the section becomes free, and the failures in this trade almost always happen at that point rather than during the cut.
Concrete weighs roughly 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre, so a modest looking section can be several tonnes. Every wire saw job we quote includes a calculated section weight, a restraint arrangement holding the piece while the cut completes, and an agreed lifting method with a laydown area identified before we start.
If a contractor quotes wire sawing without asking how the section is coming out, that is the question they have not thought about yet.
