What it is

When to specify wall sawing

Wall sawing runs a diamond blade along a rail track bolted to the concrete face. Because the track holds the line, the cut is straight over its full length and the corners are square, which is what separates a saw cut opening from one broken out with a breaker and made good afterwards.

This is the method for door openings, window openings, lift shaft penetrations, stair core openings and any rectangular hole in a wall that has to look deliberate. On a fit-out programme in Business Bay or on Abu Dhabi island, wall sawing is usually the difference between a clean handover and a plastering bill.

Depth is the main constraint. A single pass reaches around 800 mm, and cutting from both faces roughly doubles that where access allows. If the wall is thicker than the blade can reach from either side, wire sawing takes over and we will say so at survey rather than after mobilising.

GPR run over the full cut line to locate rebar, post-tension cables and embedded services.

Track and cut

Rail track anchored to the face, blade set to depth, cut run in passes with water fed to the blade.

Remove and clear

Sections segmented or craned out, opening edges dressed, slurry contained and waste taken off site.

Site control

Propping, sequence and structural sign-off

Cutting an opening in a loadbearing wall changes how load travels through the structure. Where the wall is structural, we will not cut until the structural engineer has issued a propping and sequencing requirement, and we build that requirement into the quote rather than treating it as your problem.

Sequence matters as much as the propping itself. A wide opening is normally cut in sections with props installed progressively, so the wall is never carrying its load across an unsupported span. On alterations to older buildings across Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, this is where most of the risk sits.

If you do not yet have engineer's drawings, say so at enquiry. We can cut to a marked-up sketch on non-structural blockwork immediately, but on RC we will ask for the sign-off first.

How deep can a wall saw cut?
A single pass reaches roughly 800 mm depending on blade diameter, and cutting from both faces of the wall roughly doubles the achievable thickness where both sides are accessible. Beyond that, diamond wire sawing is the correct method because it has no practical depth limit. We confirm which method applies at the site survey rather than guessing from a drawing.
Can you cut an opening in a loadbearing wall?
Yes, but not without a structural engineer's propping and sequencing requirement. Removing material from a loadbearing element changes the load path, and cutting in the wrong order can crack the structure above. We build the propping into the quote and cut in sections with props installed progressively so the wall is never unsupported across the full span.
How much mess does wall sawing make?
Wall sawing is wet cutting, so it produces slurry rather than dust. We bund the work area, run a wet vacuum at the blade, and collect slurry into containers for removal off site. On occupied buildings we also sheet and protect adjoining finishes, which is included in the quoted price rather than added afterwards.
Will the opening need making good?
Usually very little. A track-guided cut produces straight edges and square corners, so in most cases the opening needs only a light dress before the frame or lining goes in. This is the main practical advantage over breaking out, where the ragged edge has to be rebuilt before anything can be fixed to it.
How long does a typical opening take?
A standard door opening in a 200 mm RC wall is normally a half-day attendance including setup, scanning, cutting, removal and clean-down. Thicker walls, restricted access, working at height or night shift permits all extend that. We give a duration in the quote so you can plan the programme around it.
